For years, I was obsessed with the wrong numbers in my business.
And it was only when I started focusing on the right numbers that my business grew from almost nothing to six-figures.
No matter what kind of business you’re building - service, product, software, or anything in between - tracking your numbers is the difference between your business failing and your business succeeding.
But for the longest time, I was focusing on all the wrong ones.
Likes, comments, followers - I tracked them all obsessively.
I could tell you exactly how many followers I had on every platform, but I had no idea how many actually visited my website.
So what should you track instead?
Ask yourself this: what's the one action I want people to take?
Then track everything that leads to that action.
For example, if you’re an agency owner who wants people to book discovery calls, track: how many people visit your website, where they're coming from, and how many fill out your contact form. That’s it.
Website visitors will tell you if people are actually finding you.
If it’s low, then your marketing strategy needs work.
Traffic sources will tell you where you should be spending your time.
Maybe you’re wasting hours on Instagram when LinkedIn drives all of your actual leads.
And contact form submissions will tell you if your website is actually working.
If people visit but your conversion rate is low (less than 2% usually) then your copy, offer, and website in general need work.
When you track the right numbers, you stop guessing and start making decisions based on data and that’s when you’ll really start moving the needle in your business.
Without tracking, you’re essentially building your business blindfolded.
But here’s what blows my mind: most entrepreneurs I talk to aren’t tracking any of this.
They have no idea how many people visit their website, where they come from, or what percentage actually convert.
They’re running their entire business on gut feeling and hope, and from experience, that’s a very dangerous game to play.
